Using PIN code vehicle data for dealer network planning

Local registration data turns network planning from guesswork into a map.

Why PIN codes

A PIN code is the six-digit postal code that identifies a delivery area in India. It is small enough to show local demand but large enough to be practical for planning. State and district totals can hide strong pockets and weak ones.

A simple method

  1. List top PIN codes. Rank PIN codes by registrations in your segment and period.
  2. Map your outlets. Plot showrooms and service points against the same PIN codes.
  3. Find white space. Flag high-registration PIN codes with no outlet nearby. These are expansion candidates.
  4. Estimate local share. Divide your sales in a PIN code by total registrations to see where you under-index.
  5. Read the mix. Check which models, CC bands and colours register locally and match your stock to them.
  6. Add electric. Where electric registrations cluster, consider charging and service capacity.

Watch-outs

  • Registrations can reflect where a vehicle is registered, which is not always where it is used.
  • Small PIN codes can show noisy numbers. Group neighbouring areas if needed.
  • Use at least a year of data to avoid seasonality.
