What it is

Vehicle registration data records new vehicles as they are registered for road use with a government authority. Each record ties a vehicle to a date, a place and a set of specifications. Counted by make, model and month, registrations are one of the closest available measures of retail demand.

What a typical record contains

  • Make, model and variant
  • Engine capacity (CC) and powertrain, such as petrol, diesel, CNG or electric
  • Body type or segment
  • Colour, where reported
  • Registration date
  • Location, such as state, district or, in India, PIN code

Who uses it

  • OEMs to track share and model performance against rivals.
  • Dealers and distributors to compare local demand with their own sales.
  • Suppliers to size demand for parts and accessories by model.
  • Investors and analysts to read segment trends between results.
  • Consultants to build market-size and entry studies.

What it does well

  • Shows what customers actually take delivery of, not what is produced or shipped.
  • Allows like-for-like comparison of models, CC bands and regions.
  • Reveals local patterns that national totals hide.

What to keep in mind

  • Timing. A registration can lag the sale or delivery by days or weeks.
  • Coverage. Countries report differently, so fields and history differ.
  • Scope. Fleet registrations, re-registrations and transfers may or may not be included, depending on the country.
  • Classification. Segments and body types are defined differently by country, so harmonisation matters for cross-country work.

How we structure it

We organise registrations on one structure across markets: country, OEM, make, model, CC and quantity, with PIN code and colour for India. See the data we cover or contact us with the market and segment you need.
