Uganda vehicle registration data: what is published and what is not
Who publishes the numbers, the latest figures we could confirm, and what is not public.
In short. Uganda publishes vehicle registrations through the Uganda Revenue Authority and the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, mainly as annual totals by vehicle type. In the year to June 2023 at least 161,401 motorcycles were registered. Make- and model-level monthly registrations were not found as open data.

Who publishes the data
- Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), Annual Data Book: Registrations and licensing by vehicle type, fiscal year July to June.

How to read these figures
- Uganda reports on a July to June fiscal year, not a calendar year.
- The same 161,401 figure is called registered in one report and imported in another, so the exact definition is not settled. Check the URA Annual Data Book before relying on it.
- Figures here come from news reports of the official statistics, because we could not open the underlying tables.
What is not publicly available
Based on the sources we reviewed.
- Make- and model-level monthly registrations.
- A split between boda boda and private motorcycles.
- A body-type breakdown of cars (saloon, station wagon, pickup).

Frequently asked questions
Does Uganda publish registrations by make and model?
We did not find make- and model-level registrations published as open data. Totals by vehicle type are published by URA and UBOS.
Are boda boda motorcycles counted separately?
Not in the sources we reviewed. A report states that at least 98% of registered motorcycles were boda bodas, but the data themselves do not give the split.
